Standing in Line

Today as we were standing in line at a wholesale club two teenagers with their mother found me very interesting to stare at. One of the kids was wearing a studded dog collar. I waved so they might realize I know they are looking at me for way too long. I still can't get over the dog collar.

I hate it when people just don't know when to stop staring. I can't stare back b/c its either just too uncomfortable or I laugh. Guess the laughter would be easier to cover up with a niqab...

Assalamu Alaikum sister Jamilah,
I see the dog collar style a lot nowadays, and it is awkward how they stare at me! I mean is there some kind of mix up in the fashion industry? Dog collars-OK! But Abayahs-NO!?

I am not wearing hijab full-time although insha'Allah I will be eventually..Thank God I have been lucky I go to a university that has a great population of Muslims...and the area I live in is pretty tolerant...how was the experience with your parents..? That has been the most stressful for me....:)

As long as you remember why you are doing what you are doing (for the sake of Allah swt) then you will be ok. Use the opportunity to show others that we are still normal, but following something they may not understand. Answer questions with a smile and if someone gets nasty just walk away.

My parents were really good about it. They were happy that I had found something that made me happy. Sometimes they didn't understand things but I did my best to explain it to them.

May Allah make it easy for you
