May Allah Protect us....

Recently a Muslim told my husband in a blog comment response that by wearing the niqab, I, and other women, are making the statement that we support the ideology that the Taliban and Osama Bin Laden stand for. This Muslim also said that the context of the niqab had changed and it stood for a backwards, extremist ideology and should not be worn by anyone who thing terrorism is wrong.

I'll give you a moment to stop laughing....... 3...2....1...

For those of you who laughed, you understand my jaw dropping shock. I mean really... this might be this person's opinion, but where do they get this from? Fox News? Of all of the niqabis I know... none of us even remotely fit this description. It is also a very horrible blanket statement about a whole group of Muslim sisters that this person does not even know. Its kind of like turning it around and saying that sisters that do not cover at all support zina and like to sin openly.

I ask Allah to protect us from such things.

... This person obviously never learned not to judge a book by its cover. Seriously. I might agree with her if you were wearing a "Osama bin Laden is my homeboy" t-shirt or something, but it is ridiculous to assume something about someone based on their clothes (unless, like I said, their clothes specifically state a certain message in writing).

Salam aleikum,

SubhanaAllah. Those guys have been making their rounds lately; the news from Egypt and Sh.Tantawi really did damage. InshaAllah we can just educate them about it and go from there.

(Anne, can it be one of those bling'd out t-shirts too? Because I'd love to see Osama with a sparkly beard...I think that'd just make his street cred grow... :-p)

I am glad you left the space in your article so I could stop laughing.

In UAE andQatar, most women wear niqab and they are FAR FAR FAR from the ideology of USB and/or taliban.

and lol at "USB is my homeboy" t-shirt. Maybe you should market that idea! lol

No way, I would never wear that shirt, even if it was sparkly. Even if I wore it as a joke, it would still glorify a man who is responsible for thousands of deaths of innocent people, Astaghfirullah.

I was in China a couple years ago, and I actually saw a store selling t-shirts with Osama bin Laden on them. I had to do a double take, I was that shocked. The store was also selling shirts with images of Mao Zedong, Lenin, and other mass murderers. :P I was stupid enough to buy a Lenin shirt because I thought it was funny, but now I seriously regret it.

Subhan Allah. I definitely did not laugh at that. I find it utterly amazing that people can be so ignorant and close-minded. It disgusts me.

i honestly find it a sad day when people think that wearing a niqab is a stance for terrorism.

so many people are cocooned in their own little worlds that outside worlds are so remote to them. so very foreign. and anything that is done a bit differently is deemed "wrong" to them.

women have been covering for ages, whether a simple scarf, veil, niqab and donning one now is certainly not innovative or a symbol for terrorism.

shows you how narrow some people's world is.

they have no clue whats on the outside of their safe zone.

In reality its not a laughing matter at all, but sometimes if you don't laugh, you'll cry.

Sometimes people are so bent on following their own desire that they will say anything to justify it.

Hi,

As a non-Muslim, I do not understand why a woman would make the choice to wear a niqab. Could you please write a post in the future that would help me to understand?

Thank you, and I really enjoy your blog.

As-salaamu 'Alaikum wa Rahmatu Allh wa Barakatuhu. Was an ignorant statement through-and-through ya ukhti. May Allah Subhana wa ta'ala soften their hearts so that they may recieve the truth.

I find this type of statement remarkably ignorant... You pretty clearly do not support killing and hatred!

...but I do also do find it hard to believe that Allah would want you to suffer from ridicule, rudness, loss of jobs, etc at all turns simply because of how you dress.
I'm also pretty aware of the counter-arguments you may provide to this sentiment, and do not want to get into a fight about it :)

I just want what's best for you! And if you believe this is what is best for you, then it is my sincere hope that you are right.

Hi Heather

Thank you for your comment and concern..... sometimes it is hard to dress this way, but I really wouldn't have it any other way. It does keep me happy and content, and any difficulties that I face are not bad enough to make me wan to stop. Some women who cover like this think its an obligation and some don't, but we all do it because be believe Allah is pleased with us when we do.

Again, thanks for reading and understanding.

A perfect illustration of the silly thoughts that people have in their ignorance, or whatever it is...

I did laugh, in a sad way.

Assalamu alaykum,

The statement made by the person shows ignorance.
1) Niqab is not a political symbol. It is part of the deen of Islam. It is not a bi'dah or anything. There is valid ijithad to show that it is okay to wear, whether you do it because you think it is fard, mandoob or mubah because it is a sunnah.
2) Niqab has nothing to do with a specific group, Taliban, Al-Qaeda or any other group.
3) It is also important to recognise that we should not bad mouth our brothers out there. They may make a mistake but we should not write them off all together for this only plays in to the hands of kuffar and their agenda to destroy Islam. In any case, we do not know the complete facts relating to 9/11 and that whole incident. Instead we should choose the better option of not having an opinion on the matter since we do not know the truth of the matter.

Whether you think niqab is obligatory to wear or not we should support any sisters who wear it and fight for their right to wear it. Look at what is happening in France now. May Allah give victory to the Ummah very soon, so we can live by Islam again.

ooh, love the discussion, masha'allah. This misguided Muslim said that the woman who wear niqab are supporting OBL and taliban, right? If i could meet with her, i'd tell her that the niqab was there the whole time. then groups like the taliban came, probably starting out with good intentions to support the niqab but their tactics didnt work out and now they became the icon for the niqab instead of vice versa. hope all that thinking made sense!

Greetings, I've just come across your blog and I am loving it so far. In regards to this particular posting, I'm not even Muslim and I find that statement hilarious. To have such a statement come from a fellow Muslim must be not only heartbreaking but annoying. I can tell you personally though, I am only a short month or two into my learning more in depth about Islam and already the reasoning behind the covering of woman makes more sense then anything I've ever heard. What I know about beliefs is that, when you find conviction in them, nothing, not even ignorant comments deter you from believing. Clearly, the reason as to why Islam has remained such a ever growing religion is because of non conformity to social change, which is the major downfall of many other religions.
Excellent blog.

As a follow up to all of the comments... there is this little thing called misguidance. Once someone falls into its trap, they can't get out. It just keeps building up in layers. I really don't know where people get these ideas from... perhaps other misguided people.... I don't know.

In the end, opinions like this confuse me. Do the owners of the opinions actually like Islam? Its very hard to tell.

Authoobillah....as Muslims we have plenty of "enemies" and ridicule coming from outside sources, to have our own brothers and sisters turning against us and judging us is horrible...I do not wear niqab, but would love to one day insh'Allah. I do wear hijab though, and could never imagine going back to life without it. I will take the difficulty finding jobs, the stares, the rude comments...I will take all of these willingly because I know I am following Allah's command.
May Allah swt bless you and continue to guide you sister. Ameen.

Oh wow !
How sad to hear this from a fellow muslim .. people really need to get their minds straight. What a sad state!
Here in these comments you have mashaAllah nonmuslims who think the statement is ridiculous... which is appreciated by the way :D

Staghfiru Allah, I am reverted niqabi, I live in denmark and here we find many muslims like that, people of Bida'ah of innovation, people that considere niqab extreme, jilbab extreme, and they don't care of to play music, photos, or any of the prohibitions, in our deen, but sisters, lhamdullah in our deen we have the wonderfull message of our Prophet(sala Allahu alaihi wa salam) the Sunnah, and if we fallow it them, we get the answers and prooves of everything, Sister Jamila, if you find any other person that give you that kind of comment tell him or her to give you prooves of that, This kind of brothers and sisters, that muck of niqabis woman, they are just people of ingorance. That Allah(Subhanna wa ta'ala) guiade them to the right way.

Subhanallah. My dear sisters and brothers, its not funny that he believed this. As you know there is so much negativity and propaganda about Islam. We must educate ourselves and be able to respond to any false accusation that anyone comes at us with, including other Muslims. We have to step it up!
