To the shore

Last Monday a sister and I went to the shores of Connecticut with my son. We took a picnic lunch and I did the sisters henna. It was a really nice day, and the water was beautiful. We sat at a spot where there was a bridge that opens up to let the ships pass. People were around us but didn't seem bothered by us at all.

As we walked back to the car, warm and happy some idiot rode by on a moped and yelled at us to 'go home'. Ugh.

Anyway, here are some pictures of the day.

You did that henna? Its absolutely stunning! How long have you been doing henna? I have tried myself but my lines never come out that flowing and graceful. Looks like a lovely day.

Assalamu alayki ;)

Nice henna! Ive never had henna. Maybe in the future inshaallah I will try it.

Dont uou just want to tell that ignorant person.. "I am home" ????
Good for you not letting it get to you.

I am a hijabi. Recently, one of my sister-in-laws neighbours referred to me as "burqa babe" in front of me......ignorance is bliss.

Thanks Fahiima, I've been doing it for a couple of years now and at first I was really bad. I've just decided to start my own little side biz doing henna!

iMuslimah - burka babe.. oh my! And yes i did want to yell at hime, or throw a rock at him... either one would have been fine :)

Mashaa Allaah sounds like you spent a nice time! Jazakillaahu khayran for the beautiful pics. The henna looks beautiful too mashaa Allaah, may Allaah bless you, ameen.

I just wanted to offer some naseehah sis, something I read from a fatwa. The following is in reference to adorning oneself with henna:

"Dyeing with henna and the like does not come under this heading (permanent tattoos). It does not change the colour of the skin, rather it is drawing and decoration and colours that disappear after a while.

Allaah has permitted women to adorn themselves in this manner on condition that the drawings do not represent animate beings such as humans or animals, and that she does not show this adornment before non-mahram men."

I loved seeing these precious photos and the henna. What a good idea for a small business for Muslimah women mashallah!

Don't worry about this idiot guy. I'm just so sorry your son was there when he said that.

I think I'll get some henna and find some friends to practice on. It does sound like a good way to get to know some other ladies. Enjoy your vacation!

If you want to get some good pre-mixed henna go to www.hennacaravan.com. The henna in the squeeze bottle might be easier at first but sometimes your hand gets really tired... if you are concerned about that get the cone.

At first, get a washable kids marker and draw it on your hand (or someone elses hand first) and then follow the lines. The washable marker will wash away but the henna will not. Leave it on for as long as you can. Heat helps it set and a nice mixture of lemon juice and sugar helps it stay on as well. Once its dry and you want to take it off, stand over the garbage or sink and brush off as much as you can...scrape it if you have too. You can rinse your hand to get any sticky stuff off but try not to scrub with soap. Get some decent hand lotion and put it on right away. The stain will be bright orange at first, but overnight it will get dark! Cant wait to see what you come up with!

Thanks for all the advice Jamilah. The washable marker is a great idea that I've never thought of before.

I have heard of the lemon juice and sugar before, so I will try that too InshaAllah.
