Revealing Your Sins

I recently read a blog that openly revealed the persons sins. It was almost as if they were proud of the disobedience that they spoke of. I seem to notice this a lot lately and wonder if they are aware of the following hadith

Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: “The Messenger of Allaah (sallallahu `alayhi wa salam) said: “Every member of my nation will be forgiven, except those who expose their wrongdoings. An example of this is that of a man who commits a sin at night which Allaah then conceals, but, the next morning, he goes and says (to people): ‘I committed such and such a sin last night’ - while Allaah had kept it secret. During the night Allaah had concealed it, but in the morning he tore up the cover provided by Allaah Himself.” [Al-Bukhaari & Muslim]

If you want to ignore the commands of our religion, then fine, but don't be so proud of it. Don't write it in your blog like you have no fear, so that everyone can cringe at your ignorance.

Hmm, maybe they don't realize that this is not a good idea. I personally hadn't heard of this hadith myself. Maybe they were telling what they did to get it off their chests (some people use blogs like a diary, so they are writing it for their benefit, perhaps not remembering that blogs can be seen by anyone). ALLAHu Alim, though. Thanks for sharing this hadith.

Assalamu alaykum sister,

Im not sure i understand the context in which your post is written. Are you talking about people who brag about "bad" things they have done, yet how fufilling their past sins were? Because then of course, I totally agree.

I only ask because we all make mistakes, and if I can help someone learn from mine (like my son or husband for example) I will most certainly share what I did wrong, and how impacted me or someone else.

Can you clarify?

Thanks :)

Salams,
Yeah I found one blog where the blogger reveals sins of OTHERS!!! Aoothubillah.
May ALlah swt protect us from our own selves.

Sister Jamilah,
I really appreciate how you choose all sorts of topics to talk about. May Allah reward you for it. Just wondering if maybe you could change the font a little to make it easier to read...I think I need glasses!

Asalamu Alaikum iMuslimah

With what I have been seeing its not a 'get it off your chest' kind of thing. Its publicly saying that they refuse to obey a command of Allah swt and they are fine with it.

With things like this it is very hard to advise someone because they already seem like they are ready for a fight...

May Allah guide us all.

Revealing of one's sins to others without any genuine reason is also a sin

when haya(modesty) leaves,comes evil.

Commiting sins is directly proportional to the level of taqwa and haya in one's heart i.e less the taqwa, haya, greater will be his/her crime.

As you know from my comment policy I reserve the right to reject comments. I recently had to do that. Someone thought that this blog post was about them (over active ego perhaps)... in any case if someone does not like me, or what I write, its best to just stay away.

Again, I ask that if you don't like me or my posts, don't read them. I am the first to admit that I make mistakes all the time. The only thing I can do is to ask Allah to forgive me. We all change and grow. Lets give each other some room for forgiveness.

I've never heard that hadith before either, thanks for sharing it. It makes perfect sense of course, I wish I'd read it before having to learn the hard way!

It can be beneficial to tell someone else about a past sin and its consequences, if you know telling that person will help them in some way to be a better muslim, but one has to be extremely careful as it can backfire - the other person, if they look up to you in some way, may decide your sin entitles them to commit the same sin, or it may make them lose all respect for you. Or the person may end up backbiting and telling others about something you told them in confidence.

Much wiser to follow the hadith and keep your mistakes between you and Allah wherever possible - Allah is all-forgiving but people aren't.
